Top 10 of 2000 - Mike Cade
1. Mr. Bungle, California. A great, great album that I stupidly left off my 1999 Top 10 list, hence its inclusion here. With California, Mr. Bungle proves they can mix wildly disparate influences more fluidly than any band since Queen.
2. Various Artists, The Virgin Suicides (soundtrack).
3. The Causey Way, 2000 tour
4. Neil Hamburger, 2000 tour. This cross-country trek (performed with artists like Tenacious D and Trans Am) brilliantly showcased Neil's 30 minutes of Jar Jar Binks, Anthony Keidis, and Princess Diana jokes. I'm still upset that I never brought enough money to buy Neil's tribute-to-Princess Di record and its commemorative handkerchief.
5.Ween, White Pepper. As with all Ween albums, the listener gets to play "Name-That-Influence" on White Pepper, with Warren Zevon, Steely Dan, Paul McCartney, XTC, and--of course—Jimmy Buffet-- all coming to mind.
6.Neil Hamburger, Inside Hamburger.
7.Johnny Cash "I'm On Fire." (Springsteen cover)
8.www.jimgoad.com This web-site offers ample proof that Redneck Manifesto author Jim Goad absolutely CRUSHES every "cute," self-aware, and smug indie writer in America.
9. Napster Where else but Napster can you download Buckner and Garcia's "Pac Man Fever" and Ween's "Put Your Boobs On"while listening to Camper Van Beethoven's "Take the Skinheads Bowling"?
10.GARAGEBAND.com This is Jerry Harrison and friends' on-line battle of the bands. You can upload one of your own songs onto the site but here's the catch—you have to review a handful of songs by other bands first. It's a great game for the music-obsessed. |
