In Tha Beginning... There Was Rap
(Priority)
Perhaps the producers intended a modernist stroke by allowing Master P to rap “6 ‘N Tha Mornin’” as if he just woke up at that time. But I’m dying to hear how they would account for Erick Sermon and friends radiating such little delight on  “Rapper’s Delight” or Tha Dogg Pound’s wack “Knick Knack Patty Wack” These “reinterpretations” of old school classics (and some not-so classics, which is another problem with the collection) arrive at the blandest, most exacting level of reverence so that often the only difference between the two is the timbre of the new rapper’s voice. Nothing wrong with the voices of Coolio, Sean “Puffy” Combs or Cypress Hill per se, but if they’re not going to do anything with the music, get Dr. Octagon or PM Dawn or Tricky or (here’s a novel idea) some female rappers in there for some respectable disrespecting. Only the Wu-Tang Clan’s “Sucker MC’s” threatens to inject some personality into the proceedings, especially when sicko MC Ol’ Dirty Bastard boasts of never having gone to St. John’s University. Ah, progress!
