Vicki Guzman
Climb It
(self-release)
Intelligent lyrics and adventurous back beats make Madison singer/songwriter Vicki Guzman’s debut CD a memorable affair with a well-informed heart. The “giddy up and go” of  “Let Me,” the dreamy, weaving of guitars on “Take Me As I Am” and the porch swing samba of “Back to You” all point to an experienced musician who likes to explore and investigate. It comes as no surprise, then, that Guzman not only owns a degree in Music History, but also has years of experience playing coffeeshops and festivals, entertaining the masses as part of the bands We and Climate. Possessing an easy way with words, Guzman’s best lyrics often sound like good conversations, with thoughts we all might have pondered from time to time. Whether bouncing to the leapfrog swivel of “Sometimes” or coasting on the languid “Free Me Now,” there is no sense of filler or half-efforts. Produced by Guzman and Chris Rose, who also plays drums on half the tracks, Climb It is political without being preachy, sensitive but not pretentious. A disc that boogies with opinions, Climb It leaves everyone feeling better for having heard an alternative point of view.
