Secret Chiefs 3
Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws: HURQALYA
(Amarillo)
Ahhhhhh… This is more like it. Mystic weirdoes Secret Chiefs 3 have their pagan arrows aimed at “Beauty and Truth.” Influences are scattered everywhere, from Islamic film music to surf-rock to things only a forensics expert could dig up. Ricocheting back and forth from moments of tranquil calm (“Rose Garden of Mystery”) to flesh-gnawing viciousness (“Waves of Blood”) to whatever’s in-between, HURQALYA is a laboratory of sound. It’s tailor-made for space-age snake charmers and time-traveling shamen priests. And it’s just what you’d expect from a band that KILLS the occasional audience member. (I bet those Chiefs have a thing for knives.) Yes, blood for breakfast, blood for lunch… that ought to be SC3’s motto. Hallelujah.
