Thumb of Maid
Thumb of Maid
(Deaf Khan)
Gone loco in the go-go, the four groovy dudes of California’s Thumb of Maid spin enough early-60s jazz-induced lounge chords to keep the shindig open all night. Despite their inclinations towards sophisticated arrangements, the Thumb’s debut is is refreshingly punkish, bold enough to mix tongue-in-cheek narratives with daring retro-chic. Lyrics, both sneering and imaginative, slip beneath the twin intertwining fretwork of guitarists Greg and Thom Moore while Thumb of Maid shimmies and bunny hops into twisted scenarios done up in three-part harmony. Whether swooning under a girlfriend’s fever on “105,” or dreaming up a “Moon Madeon” or “Mannequin Witch,” the details are delivered with vaudeville finesse. The psychowavy sounds of “Round the Way” and the dreamboat recitative on “I Love Your Loneliness” show a band full of shenanigans, and with the talent to pull off their sneaky little pranks. Subversive (and gleefully so), Thumb of Maid is a delightful departure from angst-driven drivel and pop-rock pablum.
