Coventry Jones
Cosmic Truth
(self-release)
With a delivery that conjures a leaf floating down a brook, Milwaukee singer-songwriter Coventry Jones kicks off his winsome and charming disc like a Mr. BoJangles for the coming millennium. Harking back to a nostalgic appreciation for folk balladry and solid, honest musicianship, his new CD, Cosmic Truth, relies on closely woven teamwork to lift the songs with breezy confidence. While Coventry Jones retains the feel good roots of country folk, he details a strategy for survival in sharp conscientious lyrics that delve deeper than their simple rhymes. The pace is upbeat, but easy, the messages are insinuating without being intimidating, strong, sharp words with a good beat pushing them. Mandolin, fiddle, harmonica and slide guitar add up for a down home feel to the proceedings and each of the twelve tracks gets right down to the point without belaboring it. You'll find no self-indulgent posturing anywhere on Cosmic Truth, only positive liberties, common observation and reflective nostalgia. Coventry Jones swings on the back porch and dances on the ceiling with instructive tales vaguely familiar, but decidedly entertaining.
