20 MINUTE LOOP 20 MINUTE LOOP (self-release) San Francisco's 20 minute loop used an airplane safety card to compile most of the artwork for their self-entitled CD. All of us know how valuable that information is in the event of a water landing. Cheers to any band that spreads the knowledge of safety. Artwork aside I put this CD in and heard a wonderfully distorted guitar riff followed by two very fast and somewhat annoying pitched voices singing in unison. In a panic I took out the CD and put it back in its case. About a week later I decided to give the disc one more try. I put the disc in, quickly turned to song number two and tried to listen without any preconceived notions. The first difference noticed was that both a male and female sing every song on the album together, something rarely seen nowadays. With harmonies that would make even Simon and Garfunkle proud, Kelly Atkins and Greg Giles sing unusually nervous songs about everything from love and cake to dogs and old men. With a voice reminiscent of Dolores O' Riordan of The Cranberries, Kelly Atkins gracefully transforms her depressing and often angry lyrics into smooth sounding elegance. On "You Know So Much" Atkins sounds almost seductive as she sings, "It's much too late, put him to bed, I'll break his neck" some would almost feel fortunate for the man she is talking about. Although she seems to be the standout talent in the band, Her male counterpart, Greg Giles shows he has strong vocal ability with songs like "Bunnyman and Chickengirl" and "Drowning". The sound between the two is accompanied well by the constant blend of acoustic and electric guitars playing throughout the album. There is not really anything on this album that will cause someone to stand up and yell, ''It's great to be alive!" But as a collective whole it's a wonderful hook happy Indie album.
