TUPAK SHAKUR
The Rose That Grew From Concrete - Vol. 1
Amaru/Interscope

Here it is, another posthumous celebration of the life and art of Tupac Shakur.   On this, his third release from the grave, we are presented with interpretations of his poems by everyone from Mos Def to Danny Glover and the Cast of the Lion King.  The scope of the project is expansive, with mostly negative results. Mos Def has the right idea with his interpretation of Can U C the Pride in the Panther, but there is little else that I enjoyed.  Most of the artists seem to be giving it good effort, but it just doesn't work as an album. The question that kept popping into my head was, "who would sit down and listen to this disc?"  The answer: nobody.  Yes, the writings do provide us with another, more thoughtful side of Tupac, but most of the material feels incomplete and is surrounded by sub-par production.  So, Tupac fans, put in one his old CDs and spend your money on some new talent.                                                    Bo Twiggs
