Straight from the heart of America, indulging in a wonderful array of homegrown bells and whistles, former Pavement main-man Stephen Malkmus' self-titled disc brims with reckless energy.  Powered by a jumping bean back-up that come across more like good friends than the competent musicians required to pull off his musical shenanigans, "Stephen Malkmus," rejoices in warm, twisted pleasures both innovative and nostalgic, left-of-center, but familiar. Be it pirates, toe rings or Yul Brynner, Malkmus hosts a colorful gallery of snapshot short stories wrapped around a cavalier concoction of goofy grooves and good- hearted whiz kid whimsy. Like some childhood Frankenstein with the combined brains of Lou Reed and Ray Davies, Stephen comes across like a congenial Brian Eno, witty, playful and joyfully pleased with himself.  by John Noyd
