THE PLACES
The Auto-pilot Knows You Best
Absolutely Kosher Records

Reaching out from their lo-fi murmurs to paint their aching fog-bound feelings, Portland, Oregon's The Places take their time to create receding waves of observation and hindsight.  Their recent, "The Autopilot Knows You Best," slowly builds to its cataclysmic conclusions, collapsing gracefully within songs; swirled about ragdoll blues spoken internally, but heard out loud.  Led by singer-poetess Amy Anelle, The Places drift into a seething rage that never quite takes flight, swelling with subdued ecstasies as ironic snippets of a 50's Public service announcement frame each song.  Hovering with hard-won hallucinations, guitars and bass erupting over ever insistent drums, "Autopilot," radiates a tense, edgy sound that is swept and washed and dashed against the shore, calmly infiltrating the listener with its bewitching mantras of solitude.        by  John Noyd
