Hey Everybody! You remember when you were a kid and you would send in the top of the cereal box to try to win a contest from Kellog's cereal. When you read the fine print you would see a little stipulation "...relatives and children of Kellogs employees are not allowed to participate". Now, why didn't the WAMI awards remember that. I KNOW they're old enough!! I checked their website at www.wami.org (go ahead and check this for yourself), in the list of nominees and winners for the last two years (that's all they list), of the 5 nominees for Music Person Of The Year,, 3 of them are WAMI board members....and..you have to be an "academy member" to nominate. Either this shows the ignorance and ineptitude of you the music industry of Wisconsin, or, it shows that the WAMIs are a self-serving pack of back patters! I'll take the latter!
Why am I so sour? Just recently, the WAMIs came to Madison (my home turf) to conduct a membership drive. The only problem was that it was disguised as a "networking" meeting. In the rhetoric before the event were things like "learn how to get booked at Summerfest". That was the straw that broke the camels back. A musician here asked me if I was going, he said "I'm going to learn how to get booked at Summerfest". He had a naive smile on his face. He actually believed that this might happen. Well, I can tell you that he's not booked this year! When WAMIs were asked in private how bands get booked at Summerfest, the reply was "they have to know US". Wow. I just don't think it's right to prey on the hopes and dreams of young musicians to get membership up! The opinions expressed here are the sole opinions of the publisher.
